Sr. Courses
SCIENCE 10 (SC10 -#640) This course provides an in depth look at the nature of matter through the disciplines of physics and chemistry. Heredity and genetics are explored in the biology portion of the course. Successful completion of this course will provide students with a strong foundation for more specialized science courses in grade 11. There is a required provincial exam worth 20% of the final grade.
EARTH SCIENCE 11 (ESC11 - #543) This course examines the Earth and its place in the universe. Topics include a study of: 1. Atmospheric Science: Atmosphere, weather and climate. 2. Oceanographic Science: Ocean basins and currents. 3. Astronomical Science Volcanoes, earthquakes, earth materials, earth's history and plate tectonics. Some lab work is required, but this course does not require highly specialized math skills.
BIOLOGY 11 (BI 11 - #540) Biology 11 is especially suited to those students who continue to have strong interest in Science or need a background in the Biological Sciences. In this course, students will be introduced to the wide diversity of life and how the organisms are related. Students will study genetics, reasons for genetic variations, mechanisms for organic evolution, and representatives of the major groups of living creatures on the planet. The mammals will be studied in greater detail than the other groups. Students will learn about various organ systems within the mammal and will do a rat dissection. The final unit will be on Ecology. Here the students will develop a full understanding of Ecological terms and concepts using computer programs and hand on activities to simulate actual interactions. Recommend: Science 10
BIOLOGY 12 (BI 12 - # 440) Biology 12 builds on Biology 11 and is especially suited to those students who need a background in the Biological Sciences. In this course, students will study Cell Biology, which includes cell structure, cell functions, and cell composition. Students will learn about cellular processes that contribute to the Continuity of Life and look at current explanations for diseases, such as Cancer and Aids. Students will also study Human Biology by looking at certain body systems in great detail, namely the Respiratory, Circulatory, Reproduction, Urinary, and Nervous System. Students will learn about the various systems by doing various dissections, using various software titles and the World Wide Web. By the end of the course, students should develop an appreciation for the complex relationship that exists between the various parts of the human body. Biology 12 is a provincially examinable course; Therefore students may write a government exam worth 40% of their mark. Recommend: Biology 11 (60%)
CHEMISTRY 11 (CH11 - #541) Chemistry is the study of different types of matter and their interactions with each other. Chemical Reactions, Composition of the Atom, Bonding, and Gases are some of the topics covered. A strong background in Mathematics is helpful since much of the classroom work involves calculations. At least 20% of class time will be devoted to laboratory experiments. Recommend: Science 10 (60%)
CHEMISTRY 12 (CH12 - #441) This is a continuation of Chemistry 11. The topics covered are Solutions, Reaction Rates, Chemical Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, and Electrochemistry. There is an emphasis on quantitative problem solving as well as some qualitative, analytical work. At least 20% of class time will be devoted to laboratory experiments. This course includes a optional provincial examination worth 40% of the final grade. Recommend: chemistry 11 (70%)
PHYSICS 11 (PH 11 - #542) This introductory course in Physics includes a wide variety of topic areas. Topics include: Kinematics, Dynamics, Mechanics, Gravitation, waves, Optics, Nuclear Physics and Relativity. Approximately 20% of the course grade is derived from the evaluation of laboratory work. Recommend: Math 10 (70%)
PHYSICS 12 (PH 12 - #442) Physics 12 is intended for students who have a strong interest in Physics or who need a background in the physical sciences to support future career plans. The course emphasizes the study of Mechanics. Topic areas include: Vectors, Equilibrium, Dynamics, Kinetics, Momentum, Electronics and Magnetism. Approximately 15% of the course grade is derived from the evaluation of laboratory work. The course is demanding and requires substantial home study. This course includes a optional government examination worth 40% of the final grade. Recommend: Physics 11 (73%) and Mathematics 11 (73%) Physics 12 offered in 2006/2007 2008/2009 2010/2011
Jr. Course
SCIENCE 9 (SC 9 - #740) This course continues to develop the skills and processes begun in Science 8. These include using lab equipment such as Bunsen burners, microscopes and dissection. Students will be provided opportunities to explore topics in astronomy, biology, chemistry and physics.
