PSS Code of Conduct

Purpose

To promote responsible citizenship by communicating to students, parents, and staff clear boundaries and expectations that support an effective learning environment.

Values

We believe in a school environment that is based upon respect.

·Respect of Self

·Respect of Others

·Respect of Learning

Achieving this is the responsibility of the entire school community. These expectations apply to behaviour at school, on-line, during school-organized or sponsored activities, and behaviour beyond these times that negatively impacts the safe, caring or orderly environment of the school, and/or student learning.

In addition our school promotes the values expressed in the BC Human Rights Code respecting the rights of all individuals and prohibiting discrimination based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, marital or family status, religion, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation.

Acceptable conduct includes:

·Acting in a manner that brings credit to the school and to the individual

·Cleaning up after yourself;

· Performing random acts of kindness;

·Attending school with a clear and open mind ready to learn

·Informing an adult of incidents that do not demonstrate respect

·Accepting responsibility to make our school safe.

Unacceptable conduct includes

·Interfering with the learning of others

·Disrupting the respectful environment eg. swearing, vandalism;

·Creating unsafe conditions

·Acts of bullying, harassment, intimidation or physical violence

· Retaliation against a person who has reported incidents

·Taking pictures or video inappropriately and/or uploading to the internet;

·Illegal acts.

Consequences

As students become older and more mature we expect that their personal responsibility and self-discipline will increase, and the consequences for inappropriate behaviour will also increase.

Unacceptable conduct will be dealt with in the following manner:

·Students will always be treated with respect and dignity for all violations of our code of conduct;

·Consequences will increase for repeat behaviour;

·Acts of bullying and harassment according to our district policy;

·Behaviour that is more appropriate will be discussed;

·Consistently and fairly.

Notification

Parents will be notified for serious breaches of the code of conduct. Minor offences will be worked out with the students and the parents may be informed.

Depending on the severity of the infraction, the school may inform other parties as necessary. For example, parents of the student offender(s) and parents of the student victim(s) may be notified. In case of illegal activity, the RCMP will be notified. If the safety or well being of a student is in question, the Ministry of Children and Families will be notified.
